Probate is the court process for settling a deceased person’s estate. The court appoints or approves an executor whose duties are to notify the beneficiaries named in the will, locate and gather the estate’s assets, notify creditors, pay bills, and close open accounts. After creditors and taxes are paid and court paperwork is completed and approved, the executor transfers estate property to beneficiaries and closes the estate.
